The Journey from Ubud to the Ferry in Northern Bali

However, this route is also busy with large trucks and buses, so it’s essential to drive cautiously and stay alert, especially when vehicles are overtaking. The ride is long, typically taking around 3 hours depending on stops and traffic, but the beautiful scenery makes it worth the effort.
Crossing to Java by Ferry
Once you arrive at the ferry terminal in Gilimanuk, you’ll need to take a ferry across to Ketapang in East Java. Tickets can be booked in advance using the Ferizy app, but they are sold in hourly slots, so you’ll need to know your exact arrival time.
If you’re unsure, it’s often easier to buy your ticket upon arrival at the terminal. The ferry ride itself takes about one to one and a half hours, depending on sea traffic. It’s a smooth crossing, but it’s a good idea to bring snacks and water since options on board are limited.
Reaching your accommodation in Java
After arriving in Ketapang, the next step is to ride to your accommodation near Mount Ijen. It’s highly recommended to choose a hotel or guesthouse close to the volcano to minimize travel time in the early morning.
Be aware that the area around Mount Ijen is relatively undeveloped, with few tourist facilities or restaurants, particularly during the low season. The ride from the ferry terminal to most accommodations near the volcano takes around 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the location of your stay.
Hiking Mount Ijen
The hike up Mount Ijen is undoubtedly the highlight of this trip, offering a unique and unforgettable experience. You have the option to hike independently or join a guided tour. If you choose to go without a guide, you’ll need to pay for parking, the entrance fee, and buy oxygen masks to protect yourself from the sulfuric fumes near the crater.
Guided tours usually start at 2 AM, as the hike takes around one and a half to two and a half hours depending on your fitness level. The trail includes six rest stops with basic toilet facilities and refreshments, which provide a welcome break during the ascent.
At the top, you’ll be rewarded with a stunning sunrise over the crater and a breathtaking view of the turquoise sulfuric lake. The temperature at the summit is quite chilly, so make sure to bring layers to keep warm. Along the way, you’ll pass by Bali’s famous twin lakes, lush jungle landscapes, and vibrant agricultural areas filled with fruit, vegetable, and flower plantations. This route provides a completely different perspective on Bali’s natural beauty and is a fitting end to an unforgettable adventure.
